Endless Dark Waters

I was on a rowing team for most of high school—a sport funded by rich, W.A.S.P. New England prep school associations—which is laughable and entirely off-brand for me, a surly-looking individual decked out in all black. Anyways, I didn’t do any of the hard physical exertion, I just curled up like a fetus at the front of the boat, barking at my Lululemon-outfitted legion of rowers. Daylight savings in the wintertime was my nemesis, when the sun set over the estuary before we even launched. Navigating the murky waters was hellish, with little blinking LED boat lights and vague black blobs in the distance as your sole reference points. Each practice was largely cold and miserable, but also beautiful: the inky water would glisten and shimmer as the boat’s long shell cut through the bobbing waves with each rhythmic clunk from the oars. The horizontal knit of this Blue Blue Japan crewneck, with its subtle alternations in width and shades of indigo, reminds me of those chilly evenings out on the water. I find myself constantly running my hand over the fabric, taking in each textured nub, just as I would run my hand through the ripples of the seemingly endless dark waters surrounding me.
