I first met Cody Hudson as one of the owners of Michelin starred restaurant, Longman & Eagle. A friend was shooting a video about his favorite cocktails around the city and invited me along to the Longman shoot. I was a regular at the bar and knew much of the staff, but when we arrived we were greeted by someone I hadn't met before--an artfully disheveled, soft spoken, unassuming, down to earth guy who offered to help us with whatever we needed and even gave us a tour of the soon to be opened hotel rooms above the restaurant.
It wasn't until later that I discovered that Cody was much more than a restauranteur. Slowly, I started to realize the scope of his work as an artist and graphic designer. I realized how many albums I owned that he had done the artwork for. I realized just how many Nike and Stussy collaborations there were where I had seen is work. I realized how many incredible galleries and museums around the world have shown his art. This is just scratching the surface when it comes to all the amazing work he's created both under his own name and though his commercial art house, Struggle Inc. And, all the while, here's this laid back, good natured guy, opening more and more successful bars and restaurants in Chicago.
On top of all that he was happy to help out this fledgling men's clothing store in his neighborhood any way he could: hooking us up with food and drink sponsorships for events, bringing friends by and showing them the shop, and now, giving us the honor of displaying and selling some of his original prints here at MEYVN.
When we first opened MEYVN, we envisioned all types of people shopping here. But, we really relished the idea of people with unique creative points of view finding interesting pieces that really spoke to them and assembling outfits that were intensely personal. That's why Stephen stood out to us. Stephen was that customer.
So, when we found out that Stephen was an artist it made complete sense.
Stephen Eichhorn lives and works in Chicago, IL. In 2006, he received his BFA from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. His work has been included in numerous national solo and group exhibitions, with highlights including Johalla Projects, Chicago (2014), CES Gallery, Los Angeles (2014), Ebersmoore, Chicago (2012, 2011); the Elmhurst Art Museum, Elmhurst, IL (2012); Purdue University, West Lafayette, IN (2012); Bucket Rider Gallery, Chicago (2008); Josée Bienvenu Gallery, NY (2008); and Cairo, Seattle (2008).
More than anything, Stephen is known for his detailed collage work, specifically working with images of plants and animals. He has thousands of intricately cut out images of all sizes and level of detail from books and magazines of all sorts of fauna. The key is being able to remove them from their original context and then to rearrange them on the canvas like a "paper puzzle."
