From Chinese High Schools to Rap Album Covers

When did tracksuits become cool? As a kid growing up in China, I used to watch the students at the nearby middle school trudge to class each morning and bemoan their uniforms–heinous green and white tracksuits. It wasn’t until I moved to California and started getting into West Coast hip hop, and then London grime, that tracksuits became the uniform of swaggering rappers as opposed to that of Chinese teenagers. From Skepta’s tracksuit mafia to Freddie Gibbs donning a full Adidas ensemble on the album cover for Gibbs and Madlib’s Piñata, tracksuits were suddenly covetable statement pieces. Some might go for the classic Adidas tri-stripe a la Gibbs, but there are a plethora of more unique and equally eye-catching options out. N. Hoolywood’s Track Jacket, for example, is a rich navy blue raglan-cut joint that looks equally good on its own as it does paired with the matching pants.
