A Politically Loaded Waffle of a Shirt

This shirt from Blue Blue Japan is a jersey knit. My boss Noah says it looks like a waffle. I think it looks like a barbed wire fence, with the just-so-slightly frayed hem and the little crisscrossing lines forming miniscule diamonds. Barbed wire fences have been on my mind since junior year of high school, when suburban urges for delinquency got the better of me and an Ivy League-bound friend one spring day. We drove out to the supposedly “sus” part of Oakland to explore an abandoned, fenced-off train station. My friend was over the fence and I was perched on top of the barbed wire, palms and thighs digging into the spikes, when a cop popped out of what we thought was an abandoned car in the lot. We thought we were goners, our dreams of university suddenly threatened by the sudden prospect of an arrest or blemished record. Anyways, the cop realized it was just a small Asian girl and a small blond girl from the “nice part of town” and, due to America’s intensely flawed policing practices and grotesque, heavily racialized respectability politics, we were merely shooed away from the scene. Anyways, for me, this Blue Blue Japan shirt carries heavy sociopolitical weight. For others? It’s just a really nice indigo-dyed shirt that is slightly reminiscent of a lovely breakfast food.
